Give people with disabilities priority on elevators

In order to maintain a respectful campus environment, it is a best practice to allow people in wheelchairs to board campus elevators first.

Recently, several students using wheelchairs have approached Disability Support Services about an important concern. On certain occasions, when elevators are full and the doors open, wheelchair users are not able to find room to roll in. Able-bodied individuals are not stepping out to give wheelchair users priority.

Seattle Central respects and values our students, colleagues and visitors who have disabilities, and appropriately accommodating those who use wheelchairs is an important way to demonstrate this. Please remember – it is proper protocol to ensure individuals who use wheelchairs are able to access elevators first. Able-bodied people should wait for another elevator. Whenever this situation arises, please take a moment to educate others in whatever venue is most appropriate.
