General Education Requirements

All students completing one–year or two–year certificates and / or two–year degrees in an approved workforce education program area are required to take a general education core as follows:

Certificates

Academic Core (10–15 credits)

  • English Composition (Humanities)
  • Speech (Social Sciences)
  • Social Interaction / Diversity (Social Sciences)
  • Quantitative Reasoning/Mathematics (Natural Sciences / Mathematics)
  • Computers

This core may be in the form of discrete courses or may be embedded. All course work must be offered and taught at the college (100 level or higher) level. Students who enroll in the programs must be eligible to take English 101 or English 105 and eligible to take a 100–level or above mathematics or quantitative reasoning course.

Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) Degree

Basic Academic Core (20 credits)

  • English Composition (5-10 credits)
  • Speech/Diversity (5 credits)
  • Social Intervention (3-5 credits)
  • Quantitative Reasoning / Math (5 credits)
  • Computers (4-5 credits)

This core may be in the form of discrete courses or may be embedded. All course work must be offered and taught at the college (100 level or higher) level. Students who enroll in the program must be eligible to take ENGLISH 101 or ENGLISH 105 and eligible to take a 100–level or above math or quantitative reasoning course.

Related Instruction Core (12 credits): Selections made from natural science, social science, humanities or other technical courses that derive from these disciplines and that relate to, enhance or otherwise augment the basic educational preparation in the selected occupational/program area.

Associate of Applied Science - Transfer (A.A.S.-T) Degree

Basic Academic Core (20 credits)

  • English Composition (5-10 credits)
  • Speech/Diversity (5 credits)
  • Social Intervention (5 credits)
  • Quantitative Reasoning / Math (5 credits)

This core must be selected from college transfer courses and offered and taught at the college (100 level or higher) level. Students who enroll must be eligible to take English 101 and a 100–level or above college transfer mathematics course.

Related Instruction Core (10-12 credits)

  • Computers (4-5 credits)

Selections made from college transfer natural science, social science, humanities or other selected technical courses that relate to, enhance or otherwise augment the basic educational preparation in the selected occupational / program area.

General education and related instruction course requirements for workforce education programs offering degrees and / or certificates are published in the District catalog as part of the overall program description and delineation of courses required for the degree and / or certificate.
