Associate in Math Education DTA /MRP program- A major ready direct transfer college transfer degree program, designed for students who want to transfer to a university to earn a degree and teaching certificate to teach secondary (6-12) math.

The Associate in Math Education DTA/MRP program takes approximately two years to complete based upon full time enrollment. The program is designed to provide a solid foundation for direct transfer to universities that offer a bachelors degree in education with endorsement in secondary math and teaching certificate in Washington state. An overall 2.0 GPA is required to earn the degree. However, a 3.0 or better in program pre-requisites as well as an overall average above a 3.0 GPA will be required for many competitive programs. Some programs require a minimum 2.0 in each transfer course taken. Students must check with universities to see specific GPA information as it does vary depending upon the university. In addition, students must meet various other university program requirements before entering a BA in Ed program, including taking the WEST-B and WEST-E (subject) math test. Teacher Training/Education programs at SCCC offers a non-credit test prep course to help students prepare to take the WEST-B. Please contact the department at 587-3895. Admittance to Seattle Central's associate degree program does not guarantee admittance to a university B.A in Education program.

Career Opportunities

Seattle Central's Education Program results in an associate in math education DTA/MRP College transfer degree.

After completing the associate degree, students will need to pursue at least a B.A. degree in Math Education with teaching certificate at a four-year university in order to teach secondary math in a Washington State public school.

Learning Outcomes

The AME DTA/MRP degree is designed to fulfill a set of desired learning outcomes for the general education of a college undergraduate in the United States in the 21st century. The program is an associate degree tailored for a math education major. The goal of the program incorporates major ready pre-requisite classes so that students are ready to directly enter their major in a Bachelor in Math Education Degree program at a university. Students completing the program should:

  1. Have college level knowledge and skills in critical thinking, quantitative analysis, and written compositions.
  2. Have college –level mastery of information literacy and technology literacy.
  3. Have effective skills for in person and media based interactions with individuals and within groups.
  4. Understand methods and modes of inquiry specific to traditional and contemporary areas of knowledge in the humanities and arts, natural and physical sciences, mathematics and the social sciences.
  5. Understand the interdisciplinary nature of knowledge.
  6. Understand the United States as a multi-cultural, multi-complex society, with emphasis on the K-12 educational system.
  7. Understand the global society and processes of globalization from mostly, but not exclusively from non-western and indigenous perspectives.

Procedure for admission

  1. Admission
    Step 1: Apply to the Admissions Office. (206) 934-5450. or apply online at https://www.public.ctc.edu/ApplicantWebClient/Applicant/ApplWelcome.aspx. Make sure admissions codes you as: a math education degree transfer student 0033.
  2. New Students who plan on seeking a degree must demonstrate English and math proficiency level, by taking the Compass Placement test or submitting college transcripts that document prior college level English and math. Testing Office: (206) 934-6344. All official high school and college transcripts must be sent to :

  3. Financial Aid. Apply early!! Applying for financial aid is a separate procedure. Inquiries regarding financial aid is obtained from the Financial Aid Office, (206) 934-3844. Also check www.teachertrainingprogram.com for scholarships
  4. Orientation (STARS): After you submit Test Scores or Transcripts, you will receive information on how to complete an Online or In-Person orientation.
  5. Contact: Teacher Training/Education department in North Plaza room 115, (206) 934-3895 only after you have been admitted to Seattle Central by the Admissions Office. Fill out and return a second application to Teacher Training/Education Programs.
  6. Academic Advising Center: After students go through Orientation (STARS), they may see an advisor. Advisors will assist the student in registering, schedule planning, recommending courses for transfer, and answering general program questions.

Scholarship Funding:

The Para-Pipeline Scholarship/Conditional Loan program is open to current paraeducators with 3 or more years of classroom experience. Para-professionals may have college credit, but must not hold a two- year degree in order to be eligible for the program. Students will complete the Associate in Math-Education degree at Seattle Central Community College (2 years) and then complete an alternative route to certification (2 more years).
