Notice
In order to meet budget reduction requirements, Seattle Central will be closing the Interpreter Training Program. We will enroll the final class of this program this summer.
If you are currently enrolled in the program, the college will make every effort to ensure that you will be able to complete your program at Seattle Central or other regional colleges that offer a similar program.
If you wish to remain enrolled in the program, you must register and pay your Fall quarter tuition by July 21. New students must also pay by July 21.

Program Overview
Certificate program, 76 credits
- Specifically designed for deaf individuals to work as interpreters for the deaf population and the deaf/blind population.
- Students accepted in fall quarter only.
- Deaf interpreter training may be a good fit for you if you are deaf, have good communication skills and enjoy working with persons who have special needs.
- Areas of study include interpreting, applied interpreting, ASL theatre, comparative linguistics and intercultural communications.
- Graduates are prepared to work as deaf interpreters in colleges, public schools, or as freelance interpreters. Deaf interpreters also work in vocational rehabilitation settings, early childhood education, and social and mental health agencies.
The Deaf Interpreter Training Certificate Program is a six-quarter program that prepares students to work as interpreters for deaf consumers with special needs and deaf-blind consumers. The curriculum includes skills classes and practicums. This program begins once a year in fall quarter.

Career Opportunities
The program is designed to prepare individuals to work as deaf interpreters in areas such as colleges, public schools or as freelance interpreters. The curriculum provides students a background that prepares them to enter work in human services areas such as vocational rehabilitation, early childhood education, and social and mental health agencies. Graduates may also find employment in theaters, libraries, companies, museums, or any other public or private arenas in which deaf and hearing people interact.
