Seattle Central ranked among most diverse colleges

In its recently released 2015 annual almanac of higher-education, the Chronicle of Higher Education ranked Seattle Central College the fifteenth most diverse among public four-year institutions.

“Seattle Central is special due to the diversity of our students,” Communications Instructor Marian Lyles said in speaking about her role at the college earlier this summer. “It reflects what is outside of the classroom. Students need to understand themselves in relation to the larger picture, to gain that understanding.”

The Chronicle calculated the rankings by using the diversity index of each college, which measures the probability that any two students at an institution are from different racial or ethnic groups. Seattle Central’s diversity index is 75.75 out of 100.

Seattle Central also placed highly in the Chronicle’s 2015 almanac for having the most international students as an associate degree-granting institution. The college placed fifth in the nation, with nearly 2,000 international students on campus, representing over 80 countries during the 2013-14 academic year.
