Campus to close at 5 p.m. on May Day

On Friday, May 1, a large May Day march is scheduled to take place on the South Plaza of Seattle Central’s Broadway campus at approximately 6 p.m. As a precautionary measure, campus will close one hour early, at 5 p.m. All students, faculty, staff and visitors must exit all campus buildings at this time. Because May 1 falls on a Friday, a day when campus does not hold evening classes, this should not cause a significant disruption to campus operations.

May Day has historically attracted a large crowd to Seattle Central’s campus. These peaceful marches have sometimes escalated to create an unsafe environment for people on and around our campus. In past years, students and employees exited campus buildings into a potentially dangerous situation, and getting home proved to be difficult due to traffic congestion and transit delays.

The safety and security of Seattle Central students, faculty, staff and visitors is of paramount importance to the college, and the decision to close campus early was made with those interests strongly in mind.

Please note this closure affects the Seattle Central College main campus on Broadway only. Seattle Vocational Institute, the Wood Technology Center and the Seattle Maritime Academy will not be affected by this early closure and will operate normally.
