Seattle Councilmember Sawant to visit campus for discusssion on WTO protest

The 1999 World Trade Organization (WTO) Ministerial Conference in Seattle was overshadowed by enormous public protests, famously known as “The Battle in Seattle.” Over two days, a crowd of 40,000 gathered to protest a range of issues surrounding the event including labor rights, globalization, environmental degradation and more. The protests made international headlines and the National Guard was called in to disperse the crowd. The controversial protests sparked a larger discussion about the role of trade and globalization for both Seattle and for the rest of the world.

It has now been 15 years since the controversial protests. What progress has been made in the realm of labor rights, civic disobedience, and more? Join Seattle City Councilmember, Kshama Sawant and others for a conversation about the Battle in Seattle: 15 Years After the WTO Protests this Thursday in Room 1110 from 12pm – 1pm.
