The People

Here, a few Publishing Arts students express themselves. Students come from around the corner and across the world; from lifetime graphic arts careers, high school vocational programs, and home offices. They choose the program for different reasons: continuing involvement after high school; retraining; adding punch to a design or art degree; following a love of ink on paper; preparing to publish a book; upgrading skills to earn a promotion; or just plain satisfying curiosity. All come with life experience of value to our learning process.

You'll see them clustered around a classmate's computer, trading ideas, or sharing Thai food during a break on the comfy old lounge sofa. They joke with the instructors but take their work seriously. It's a good life, and every day is different...

I love a challenge and integrating my hands and mind in a practical way. It’s very rewarding to be given responsibility for using complex machinery and finishing a job to the best of my ability.

My grandkids thought that only youngsters were computer-savvy. With my newfound skills in Adobe CS, they now consider Grandma pretty hip!

This is definitely not high school. I'm facing real world challenges, and love the fact that the program is such a good mix of people and abilities. And it's a lot of fun too!

I wasn't sure I could handle all the challenges when I started, but learned I can get just the right amount of faculty support when I need it. Then I move to the next level on my own.

It's important to me that the instruction relates directly to the industry. For example, our project management instructor owns and runs a local printing facility.

I come from an IT background, but am very tactile, so I like that Publishing Arts is not just about computers — it's much more than that.
