The Alumni
There are many success stories of alumni who have graduated from the Publishing Arts program which provides a springboard to new and exciting careers. Read about what some of our graduates have done with what they learned here.
Program alumni excel in top companies such as Adobe, Corbis, Getty Images, RR Donnelley, and Starbucks. They also perform important functions in well-recognized local companies: REI, GM Nameplate, Seattle Bindery, Print Management, Richmark Label, Cenveo, Sasquatch Publishing and many more.
Horizons are expanding for graduates with a range of practical, transportable skills - to other cities, other regions, other countries. They've discovered that publishing is universal, and that "When people go to work, they shouldn't have to leave their hearts at home." *
* Professor Betty Bende
I grew up in the printing industry, and worked for years in New York publishing after completing my degree at SCCC, where I handled special projects for other departments and nonprofits. My education was completely hands-on, guided by instructors who worked in the industry. It was easy to adjust to a work environment after graduating, because what I learned was real and not sugar-coated.
Linda Souriano Israeli
Production Coordinator, Cenveo
PubArts Technical Advisory Committee Chairperson
graduated 1974
SCCC provided me with a foundation for work in this fast-paced industry. I was able to explore a wide range of career opportunities while learning the technical skills needed. This was crucial to me because I didn't have a clear path to where I wanted to work, or even what I wanted to do. Now I am happily employed in the industry. SCCC offered professional instructors and a great starting place!
Dean J Ordello
Client Services Day Lead, Corbis Corporation
graduated 1999
Using my SCCC training, I grew my business from a humble startup with three letterpress windmills into an industry leader featuring 18 presses and an array of high-speed packaging and variable-data labeling equipment. I’m proud of the high-quality work we do, and the practical education that helped me get here.
Craig Robinson
President, Graphic Impressions
graduated 1972
My instructors prepared me well to become one of a handful of female lead press operators (on a four-color Komori). I’m now a homeowner with a great career, recognition and the satisfaction of seeing my work everywhere: in the mall, on ferries, in bus stations and on products locally and in countries such as Japan.
Valerie Steiner
Production Manager, Towner Press, Bellingham
graduated 1998
Working as a quality assurance technician at Adobe, here in Seattle, is the realization of a longtime dream that began at SCCC. With support from instructors and colleagues, I was able to maintain excellent grades while working full time in the industry. Now I’m part of the quality assurance team for a software product they depend on daily. I like being able to ’thank’ them with my professional contribution.
Anh Lam
Senior Quality Engineer, Adobe InDesign
Graduated 1998
My title, digital technician, didn't even exist ten years ago. Now it's a critical function. I troubleshoot and fix client files, adjust color and output quality plates and proofs for a large commercial printing business in Tukwila. It's great to have a career that allows me time to hike, bike and camp in the beautiful Northwest.
Sarah Shrader
Prepress Tech, Print Management
Graduated 1999
I was new to almost everything when I started. The program offered me greater control over the whole process so I could get the creative results I wanted. But what I appreciate most was learning how to communicate well, an ability which brought me to Seattle’s leading stock photography company and now to my own growing company.
Dante Guillen
Partner, Imago Imaging
Graduated 1998
I'm a very good pressman because of the program. My knowledge and experience in the complete printing process allow me to re-engineer jobs in order to be more efficient, saving the shop's time and my own. As a graphic artist, having had this complete immersion in the production process, I understand its limits, so that I can amaze my personal clients with a styled business card, or a piece of my own art.
Matteo Esguerra
Pressman, PIP Printing, Bellevue
