COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Lines, planes, dot and cross product, space curves, velocity, tangents, scalar fields, gradients, vector fields, and flow lines, divergence, curl, Laplacian, use of the del operator, line integrals, conservative fields, surface integrals including review of double integrals, volume integrals, introduction to the Theorems of Gauss, Stokes and Green. Transfers to the UW as Math 324.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

The course is intended to expose science and engineering students to the main concepts of vector analysis. This material will be presented in an applied physical or geometric context, whenever possible, so as to promote intuition and understanding. Students will be expected to demonstrate a grasp of the underlying geometric concepts in addition to a facility with algebraic formalism.

COURSE CONTENT:

Lines, planes, dot and cross product, space curves, velocity, tangents, scalar fields, gradients, vector fields, and flow lines, divergence, curl, Laplacian, line integrals, conservative fields, surface integrals including review of double integrals, volume integrals, introduction to the Theorems of Gauss, Stokes and Green.

USE OF TECHNOLOGY:

This course will make extensive use of the computer algebra and graphics program Mathematica ®. Students will use Mathematica ® in assignments and projects.
