DIVISION Science and Mathematics CURRICULUM College Transfer TITLE Linear Algebra NUMBER MATH 220 TYPE Mathematics CREDITS Four LENGTH One quarter of four lecture hours per week. CLASS SIZE 35 PREREQUISITE MATH&153 with 2.0 or better.
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
An introduction to the major concepts of Linear Algebra in the context of applications: matrices and systems of linear equations, the vector space Rn and the eigenvalue problem.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
This course is intended to provide students with an introduction to linear algebra and its applications. While the course is not intended to be a course in abstract vector spaces it does stress some moderately difficult abstract ideas in concrete form (eg. linear dependence, subspaces). Nontrivial applications of the theory are presented and explored in student computer projects.
COURSE CONTENT:
Systems of linear equations, Gaussian elimination, matrix algebra, linear dependence, the vector space properties of Rn, orthogonal projections, eigenvalues and eigenvectors. Applications may include: the least squares approximation, Markov chains, and systems of differential equations.
USE OF TECHNOLOGY:
This course makes extensive use of Maple or Mathematica and other computer programs both in class discussion and in weekly computer labs.
