DIVISION Science and Mathematics CURRICULUM College Transfer TITLE Precalculus NUMBER MATH&142 TYPE Mathematics CREDITS Five LENGTH One quarter of five lecture hours per week. CLASS SIZE 35 PREREQUISITE MATH&141 with 2.2 or better, or two years of high school algebra and placement exam. TECHNOLOGY A graphing calculator will be used
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
A study of trigonometry, analytic geometry in two dimensions, and related algebra topics necessary for the calculus. Topics to include right triangle trigonometry, circular functions, vectors, parametric equations and conics in rectangular coordinates. Other topics to be included by instructor.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
To introduce and expand on mathematical concepts required for further study of mathematics, engineering or science.
COURSE CONTENT:
1. Circular functions
a. definitions on unit circle
b. graphs: sin, cos, tan, cot, sec, csc
c. evaluating: algebraically and with calculators
d. identities
e. trigonometric equations
f. graphs: y=a sin(bx+c), y=acos(bx+c)
g. applications of sinusoidal functions
2. Triangles
a. right triangle definitions of trig functions
b. law of sines and cosines
c. problem solving using triangles
3. Vectors
a. planar
b. operations on plane vectors
4. Parametric equations
5. Conic sections in rectangular coordinates
