COURSE DESCRIPTION:
A study of elementary functions including polynomial, rational, exponential, and logarithmic functions. Viewed numerically, graphically and algebraically. Emphasis on the basic unifying concept of function. Provides review and extension of basic algebraic methods for solving equations and inequalities. Emphasizes applications of functions in a problem-solving context. A graphing calculator will be used.
(Students should not buy a graphing calculator before attending class.)
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
To provide students with the mathematical, technological and analytic skills necessary to study and understand the calculus. To enable students to understand and represent precalculus topics in any of the following modes: numerical, graphical, algebraic; utilizing current computer or graphing calculator technology.
COURSE CONTENT:Study of the concept of relation and its special cases: function, 1-1 function, inverse functions and relations with emphasis on graphical as well as algebraic interpretations.
Study the following functions and then applications from graphical, numerical and algebraic perspectives. Analysis includes consideration of local and global behavior.
a. linear functions - brief review
b. absolute value function
c. square root function
d. polynomial functions
