COURSE DESCRIPTION:

A lecture/workshop course in elementary algebra.

COURSE PRESENTATION:

The course emphasizes understanding concepts rather than only memorizing rules. Students are often allowed to work in groups on problems that are designed to extend their understanding and provoke new questions. Students are encouraged to use calculators for routine calculations and for investigation of concepts. This course is sometimes offered in combination with Math 081 to allow students to apply their review of basic math to the algebraic concepts covered in Math 084. It is offered once a year in combination with Math 085 for students who have had some algebra in high school. These double classes allow for more time to develop a supportive community of learners of mathematics and is intended to encourage students who are from groups under-represented in math and science.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

To introduce students to the concept of a variable and the use of variables and graphing to solve and depict problems. To prepare students for their vocational programs and to train them in the language of mathematics for higher math classes. Students are encouraged to use calculators.

COURSE CONTENT:

Use of variables in expressions involving adding, subtraction, multiplication and division.
Operations with integers and rationales.
Graphing functions.
Solving linear equations in one variable.
Solving literal equations.
Systems of linear equations in two variables.
Application of these methods to solving problems.
