COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This class is a lecture/workshop in basic concepts of computation with whole numbers, fractions, and decimals, ratio and proportion, percent,
and area and perimeter of rectangular and circular figures.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

This course teaches students basic concepts and creative approaches to solving problems. Students are encouraged to verbalize their ideas about the mathematics covered and to work together to solve interesting and complicated problems. The use of calculators is encouraged. The course seeks to encourage and prepare students to take more mathematics courses.

COURSE CONTENT:
Problem solving.
The characteristics of a number system: symbols, base, place value, and the use of zero. History of Hindu-Arabic system currently in use.
Four operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, singed whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.
Order of operations.
Estimation and use of a calculator.
Ratio and proportion.
Applications of the concept of percent.
Area and Perimeter of rectangles and circles and composite figures.
