Community colleges are a uniquely American institution.
The University of Chicago established the first Junior College in 1901 as a way to teach the first
two years of a baccalaureate degree. These university faculty and administrators hoped that
establishing junior colleges would make it possible for them to concentrate on advanced undergraduate
instruction and graduate-level instruction and research.
The Junior Colleges would concentrate on the first two years of the undergraduate degree.
Junior Colleges grew into what are now known as "Community Colleges."
There are now more than 1200 community colleges in the USA, bringing
the economic and social benefits of higher education to more than 10 million Americans
and approximately 50,000 international students each year.
