Seattle Central was founded in 1966 and is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges, an institutional accrediting body recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation and the U.S. Department of Education.
Seattle Central is part of the Seattle College District, which serves all of metropolitan Seattle and its surrounding communities, and comprises the largest community college district in the state, educating nearly 55,000 students each year.
Seattle Central is the only community college located in beautiful, downtown Seattle, Washington. Seattle is a friendly, dynamic, and safe city. Named the "most educated" city in the last U.S. census, Seattle has more residents, per capita, with Bachelor's degrees than any other city in the U.S. The weather is mild and the air and water are exceptionally clean. Our international students are high achievers. According to our most recent study, international students at Seattle Central maintain a grade point average of greater than 3.5 on a scale of 0 - 4. They have been admitted to many prestigious four-year colleges and universities, including the University of Washington, Columbia University, UCLA, Cornell and Dartmouth.
Seattle Central is also currently partnered with many 4-year colleges and universities inside and outside of Washington to provide well-defined paths from two-year programs to bachelor's degree programs.
Seattle Central was recently the subject of an article in The New York Times called, "For Achievers, A New Destination." The article focused on 11 community colleges that are known for transfer success (to four-year colleges and universities). In addition, TIME Magazine named Seattle Central "College of the Year" for outstanding student services and educational programs, the only 2-year college selected out of 1,200 in the U.S. in a one-time study.
The Seattle Central Institute of English (SCIE) is one of the oldest and most respected ESL programs in the state of Washington.
