The Intensive English Program consists of three levels (Levels 1, 2, and 3). Students in the program take a set schedule of English as a Second Language classes, designed by SCIE. Students do not choose their own classes.
Each level is ten weeks long during fall, winter, and spring quarters. Summer quarter is only eight weeks long, but the number of hours of instruction is the same as in the other quarters.
Students who complete the Intensive English Program may continue in either the College Bridge Program or Advanced English Program.
Intensive English Required Courses
Levels 1, 2 & 3 Reading/Writing/Grammar (10 hours per week)
Levels 1, 2 & 3 Speaking/Listening Grammar (10 hours per week)
These integrated Reading/Writing/Grammar and Speaking/Listening/Grammar classes are for students planning to study in an American college or university as well as for those who just want to improve their English language skills. Each class meets for two hours per day for a total of four hours per day or 20 hours of classes per week.
In Speaking/Listening/Grammar classes, students listen to a variety of recorded and authentic materials from radio and video sources.
Level 1 includes students who have studied English in their home countries, but have limited experience in real use of the language. Level 3 is fairly advanced; in Reading/Writing/Grammar classes, students read authentic materials from books, magazines, newspapers and a variety of sources.
Students with extremely low English language skills who are not yet ready for Level 1 will be able to register in SCIE’s Foundation Level English course.
