Building a Supply Kit for 3 Days

This lesson is to introduce students to being prepared with basic needs for 3 days and to start supply kit.

Lesson Ideas

  1. Vocabulary

    1. Realia: For beginning levels, introduce vocabulary by bringing in and showing real items from a kit you made.  Have students repeat words.  Handout items and students say what each is. Go to the Dollar Store or hardware store to find inexpensive items.

    2. PowerPoint:  Look at pictures and words. Begin by showing photo of downed power lines.  Ask questions about what students see.  What happened? You can shut off the lights in class to demonstrate “Power Outage.”  Demonstrate by turning out lights.

    3. Bingo:  An awesome Level 1-3 tool.  This is a picture only game with vocabulary slides and board sheets to copy from City of Seattle Office of Emergency management.

  2. Watch DVD or on-line video from City of Seattle “Personal and Family Preparedness.”  Start at the 07:00 mark.  Supply kit information runs from the 06:00 to 08:25.  For beginning levels, try watching with or without the sound.  Stop frequently to point out vocabulary.  Ask why do you need this or that item?  Once you watch it in English, have students watch it in their first language, if it is available.  Compare how much they understood from the English version and their first language version. You can use Cloze Exercise 7 (answers), Cloze Exercise 8 (answers) and Comprehension Questions Worksheet # 4 (answers) with the video.

  3. Vocabulary Handout:  This isn't a comprehensive list of what is needed but the quick essentials.  Have students fill in the vocabulary words under the picture.

  4. Spelling:  Beginning levels can practice simple vocabulary.

  5. Reading ads:  Bring in advertisements with food and other clothing items.  Price them and have students check prices at the Dollar Store or other inexpensive store like Target or Fred Meyer. Have students list and price essential items for their supply kit.

  6. Writing for beginning levels:  Write “I need…” on the board and brainstorm and a list of what students need everyday:  water, food, clothes…  “Sometimes we need…” heat, money, gas, telephone… Students can write sentences.

  7. Reading for intermediate or advanced levels:  Use skimming and scanning for pre-reading.  Students can do a jigsaw by having different groups read one of the paragraphs and report to the class what it was about.  Have students collect 10 new words from the handout.  Write the words on flashcards (1"X3" pre-cut pieces of paper).  Students can practice in pairs.  Students can read Handout 1 from the City of Seattle Office of Emergency Management’s web page, which is longer, or Handout 2 from Seattle Red Cross web page.  Both have comprehension questions added. 

  8. Writing for intermediate and advanced levels:  Have students write one or more paragraphs.  You can use any style that fits your class:  summary of the reading below or the Disaster Supply Kit handout, pro/con of creating a kit, write a letter/email to a friend telling them about importance of the kit, write a reflection of the activity and/or creation of a kit, write an opinion about creating a kit, why they will/will not create a kit at home.

  9. Simple Supply Kit and Family Plan for beginning levels:  The City of Seattle and Seattle Red Cross have a great, simple worksheet in English, Oromo, Russian, simple Chinese, traditional Chinese, Somali, Spanish, Tagalog, Thai, Tigrinya, Vietnamese, Cambodian, Laotian, Amharic, and Korean

  10. Quick and Easy 3-day checklist for beginning levels:  Have students go home and find the items in their house and check them off if they have a 3 day supply.

  11. Read and complete more detailed Disaster Kit Checklist:  Copy and handout in English or students’ first language. You can do skimming and scanning exercises.  Do a jigsaw reading where students read only one section and report to the class.  Have students discuss the list with their family at home.   Student can bring back checklists showing what they have and don’t have.

  13. Scenario 1—Camping: In the video, the man asks us to imagine we are going camping for 3 days.  What do we need? 

  14. Scenario 2—Prepare for..(windstorm):  In the video (13:53), the man asks us to pretend an event will occur in a few days and asks us what we need to do to prepare.  Do this with students.  They can list what they have at home that matches what the video says they need for 3 days.  Then students can go home and make lists:  What I have…. What I need….

  15. Scenario 3—After the... (windstorm):  Students discuss what to do after a disaster.

  16. Scenario 5—What to do in different hazards:  Students pick a disaster scenario and search the Internet to find out what to do.
