contact events, etc. Check here often. If you would like
to announce an event, send it to me and I will post it.

Schedule web page for frequent updates or
changes to your assignments or what has been taught in class that day
and secondly, the News and Updates
page constantly for any announcements during and outside of class
time!
June 8th:
1)
Today is the last day to submit any late homework - no exceptions.
2) Andrea, the ASL tutor just gave me her schedule for the next few days - she is available for tutoring on:
a) Thursday (tomorrow) from 11:30 - 1: 30 pm;
b) Next Monday from 12 - 2 pm and again at 4 - 6:30 pm and on Tuesday from 5 - 6:30 pm. Take advantage of her help if you want some feedback on your final expressive story.
June 1st:
1)
Several comments for you for your Expressive Narrative #2 assignment (and Expressive Narrative #1 homework):
a) On your 1st peer evaluation sheet; put down the name of your partner evaluating you. If they did a thorough job of evaluating you and providing good comments; your partner gets 10 points - not you! For Expressive Narrative #1; each of you will receive 1) up to 20 points for your signed narrative assuming you did all required components correctly; 2) 10 points for thoroughly doing your partner's peer evaluation; 3) 10 points for a good mental map and 4) 5 points for filling out the left column of your 2nd evaluation sheet. That is a total of 45 homework points. IF you didn't do a peer evaluation for a classmate; you lose 10 points. Lastly, you also receive a decimal grade for the same narrative which is 7% of your total class grade. For Expressive Narrative #2; you will receive 50 homework points (5 points more for your signed narrative) and the same story will count towards 8% of your total course grade. So with your 2nd revised signed narrative after you receive peer feedback; it behooves you to prepare your story well. The more effort you put into your story; the higher your grade will be. Keep your story under 5 minutes.
b) Be thorough on your evaluation sheet! Put down the chunk number and write down the sign concept or example you want me to review! Don't make me look for your example if you only put down chunk number!
c) Partners assigned to do peer evaluation - get it done on time! If your assigned partner is sick or fails to do the evaluation or doesn't show up in class; be assertive and look for someone else!
d) I am sorry about the link for Expressive Narrative #2 - last week it had the wrong due dates and that assignment says to record during lab time. I had trouble fixing that link and was only able to do so earlier today since I was out of town the last few days. I did warn you in class last week (for those who were present) to IGNORE the old due dates and to look at my schedule for the correct due dates. The required components for the story is still the same! If some of you did NOT record your narrative before class; then let me know.
e) Please keep in mind that you can also use "Youtube" to record your second and final story so you have the option of recording on DVD or on "Youtube" provided you send me an email with that link on the due date.
f) Review My Lecture Notes and click on "Distributional Aspect" sentences to get verb examples as well as on the "Temporal Aspect" sentences. Some of you did not demonstrate the Distributional Aspect example correctly in your first story. My advice to you...use one of the verbs in the sentences. Keep it simple! If you are not sure; ask a classmate or ask me. I have office hours so I would be glad to help you. Send me an email if you need to meet with me. The same is true for Classifiers - go to my Lecture Notes and click on the ones that we have already practiced in class so far. Get some ideas for your story. If you are not sure where to look; ask me!
2) Deadline for any late homework is next Wednesday, June 8th. This does not include Idioms Part 1 and Part 2 as I already showed the English translations in class last week.
3)
I will be returning some homework assignments today as well as a grade printout which is up to date. One assignment I have not finished is the "Sweet Nothing In My Ear" reports. Please check that grade printout to see if I missed any homework points or if there is a grade error. See me asap to make corrections.
4) It's countdown time. Including this week, we only have 3 classes left before the final exams. You still have homework to do i.e. Receptive Narrative #4; Homework Sentences #3; Signing Naturally Unit 12 workbook and Community Contact hours #2. So there will be some pressure as you will be working on your 2nd expressive assignment. Please keep up. Next week; I will be spending most of class time reviewing classifiers to help you get some preparation for your final expressive story.
May 23 - 25th:
1)
Some assignments are being turned in not typed - especially the Homework Sentences #1 - 2; Deaf Culture reports; Community Contact events and the Signing Family text homework. I will not accept any more handwritten homework except for: a) Signing Naturally workbook and Receptive Narrative #1 - 4 assignments and mental maps (can be drawn).
2) We will definitely have a parent panel which will take place on Wednesday, June 1st which is next week. I can't say for certain about having a Deaf-Blind speaker coming to the class. It all depends on the class schedule and what is left to cover. Keep in mind that next Monday is a holiday. I will be giving you your 2nd Expressive Narrative assignment this Wednesday which will give you a week to work on your story incorporating Unit 11 criteria.
April 25 - 27th:
1)
Classifier handouts: I distributed several handouts last week - be sure to bring them to class weekly to use them for reference during classifer practice. These papers are 3-hole punched so you can't lose them if you put them in a binder.
2) Deaf Community Contact reports: On my class schedule; I said that the first 25 points were due by a scheduled date. I am not too picky - if you only have 1 or 2 Contact hours completed by the due date; that is ok. You can finish up the rest by the 2nd due date. Please turn in the reports (typed!) as soon as you get them done. No need to wait until the due date.
April 11 - 13th:
1)
If you haven't registered for this course; please do so asap as this Friday is the deadline.
2) There are quite a few Deaf Community events that are taking place this month that you can apply towards your Community Contact hours. All of the below are posted on the ASL/ITP bulletin board outside the lab.
April 23rd: MATA Sign Language Expo
April 23rd: Movie " Black Sand" ( ASL Film with English subtitles) at Mountlake Terrace High School.
April 27th: "Mr. ShineyHead", Storyteller
April 28th: ASL Comedy Night
Doors open @ 6:15PM. Start @ 7PM - In the Gym. Adult: $7, Student: $5 ,Under 8: Free. Can pay at the door, Voice Interpreter Provided - Contact John. Location: Federal Way High School, 30611 16th Ave S.,
Federal Way, WA 98003
May 20th: "See What I Say" (live presentation) in Portland.
I strongly encourage you to attend Deaf Community events for your community contact reports instead of submitting reports for books and movies although I do allow that option. It's really essential to get some exposure to Deaf people and their culture which will make your classroom learning experience more meaningful.
3)
Just to remind you that sometimes I will make changes to the assignment due dates in the Schedule page. It depends on the class pace and there are times I will get behind thus I ask for your flexibility and patience.
April 4 - 6th:
1) New students: My instructor
information labels are ready - please do not lose that
information. It has my email and website address on it. Returning students who took my ASL 121/122 classes: If you already have my instructor information labels; then there's no need to pick one up.
2)
Purchase your required text this week and get started on "The
Signing Family" text, part 1. Again, refer to the link in my
Vocabulary and Assignments web page for questions for each part.
3) We will use the ASL Lab on Wednesdays during the quarter. Go to Room 1114 on Mondays and then to Room 1129 on Wednesdays.
Make sure you have your SCCC
student ID on hand. You will need it for
the entire quarter! When you register for an ASL
class at SCCC, you should have paid lab fees and obtained a student
ID as well. Just about all the
videos you will be watching this quarter are streamed with the
exception of the Deaf Culture videos.
You have two Deaf Culture Videos to watch this quarter. You will view the first Deaf Culture video in class while the 2nd one will be an out-of-class assignment since it's a two-hour film. Check my Schedule for due dates.
4) Community contact hours: Get started now.
You can use the same
places i.e. Starbucks, Jillian's, etc. that you attended the last two quarters
however you need to have a signing
conversation with Deaf people for at
least 15 minutes or more while you observe an event. Review the Community
Contact hours link in my Vocabulary and Assignments web page. Once you have attended a community event, then
type up the report and turn it in promptly. You don't even
have to wait until the due dates for turning them in. See my web schedule for
due dates.
5)
On my web schedule, I have set up some due dates for certain
assignments such as: The Signing Family, Receptive Narrative#1, 1st
community contact report, etc. to give you a good headstart.
6) Anyone need to
register for this class? There are still some space available. Please see me during break and make
sure you have your registration sheet ready for me to sign.
For students transferring from other colleges; remember you need a 2.0 grade or higher from your ASL 2 class to take ASL
123.
7)
In my Lectures web page, I will be posting a link called "Grammar Notes for
the Quarter" - it gives you a very brief review of the grammar we
will cover this quarter. Please keep in mind that you are welcome
to burn copies of the individual grammar CDs that I will use in class
throughout the quarter. The CDs will be placed in the ASL cabinet
under the 123 section within the next two - three weeks.
8)
The NO VOICING rule is to be maintained
during class and during
breaks.
You have enough sign vocabulary and will continue to acquire
more signs to carry on a decent conversation and this will give you
both receptive and expressive practice at the same time. You
are only in this classroom for a total of 5 hours so frankly, that's
not a lot of time. If you must talk, please do so
outside
the classroom. If I catch any student talking and being
disruptive during a class activity, I will ask that person to leave
and return at the next class section.
9)
NO CELL PHONES! Keep them off!
10)
The ASL Tutor (Andrea Kurs) will start next week. Her sign-up sheet should be posted on her door (Room 1128) this week. Keep in mind you
can apply 3 hours of tutoring time towards your Community Contact
hours requirement.
