NEWS AND UPDATES
Updated July 15, 2010

Permanent Announcements
______________________________________________________________________________

** Check the Schedule web page for frequent updates or changes to your assignments or what has been taught in class that day and secondly, the News and Updates page constantly for any announcements during and outside of class time!

***Once the ASL 123 Grade Sheet is posted, it is your responsibility to check the Grade Sheet constantly  during the quarter to see that the assignments that you have already turned in are getting recorded.  If you feel that I have overlooked an assignment, please return the paperwork to me so that I can be sure to document that information.  Please hold on to all assignments that I give back to you for the  entire quarter in case I accidentally do not record homework points or grades.   Do not wait until the end of the quarter to detect a mistake!

July 15th:

1.  Please keep in mind that if you do not turn in an assignment on the due date;  you can still turn it in for credit with a few points knocked off for being late.   Deadline for all late homework would be Thursday of week 7.  You have 2 expressive narrative assignments in addition to your final story at the end of the quarter.  Please do them on time since you are expected to give partner/peer feedback in a timely manner before your revised video is turned in on the due date.

2.  Any assignment, quiz or test that have been graded; hold on to them  for the entire quarter in case I am missing a grade or homework points.

3.  Please be aware that on Thursday, July 22nd (week 4) I will not be here in class.  Barbara Hayes will take my place then.   I will be back on Thursday, August 5th to make up next Thursday's class.

June 29th:

1) Welcome to American Sign Language 123!  I hope you've had a good break and ready to start a new quarter.  Please keep in mind that if you received less than a 2.0 GPA for ASL 122, you will not be able to continue in this class as your receptive and/or expressive skills are not up to par.   If that is the case for some of you, you are welcome to stay for the duration of the class tonight.

2)  Please keep in mind I am only on the SCCC campus Tuesdays and Thursdays this quarter.  I will only answer my campus emails on these days. This in turn means my office hours will be for those two days weekly from 5:00 to 5:30.   My website address is: http://www.seattlecentral.edu/faculty/bbernstein
Please do not lose this address - you will need it to access my course website as well as other materials such as syllabus, lecture notes, etc.  I will be giving out very few handouts.

3) Most of my web schedule has been completed.   I will still be fine tuning  it and please remember that the schedule is tentative to changes.  Also keep  in mind that the Summer quarter is only 8 weeks long therefore expect at least two assignments due on the same evening.  It behooves you to keep on top of your homework and not get behind.

4) Lab (Room 1129) -- we will be using it as our classroom from this Thursday on.  When you register for an ASL class at SCCC, you should have paid lab fees and obtained a student ID as well.
Always keep a videotape handy for recording your expressive homework.

5) Just about all the receptive narrative stories you will be watching this quarter are streamed on my website with the exception of the Deaf Culture videos.  The first Deaf Culture video will be shown in class but the 2nd one will be an out-of-class assignment.  Please check my web schedule for due dates.

6) Purchase your books this week and get started on "The Signing Family" text, part 1.  Again, refer to the link in my Course Resources web page for questions for each part.

7) There will be no ASL tutor provided during the summer so please take advantage of study groups and practice with your classmates.  We will talk more about this during syllabus and web discussion this Thursday.
