Goal: For you to get out of the classroom and explore any avenue of interest related to Deaf people, the Deaf community and the languages that they use to communicate with themselves and/or the greater community.
Directions: On your own (individually or in small groups) attend an activity that is primarily intended for ASL students or Deaf people.
For each activity you must keep a journal that contains the following:
You must earn up to 100 points in activities to receive full credit for this portion of the course.

**Interpreted
events do NOT count, unless the primary speakers is Deaf.

community contact hours if you absolutely cannot attend a Deaf Community
event.
A. Videotapes
and/or Movies about deafness or ASL that
you have not yet seen. Each movie or video is
worth 5 points each. Please get instructor permission for these alternate
assignments. These videos are located in the ASL/ITP Lab video library
drawer. Ask the lab assistant for assistance.

a) What was the focus of this video? List 3 - 4 highlights and give brief
details for each.
b) What new information did you learn about Deaf Culture or the
Deaf Community? What misconceptions were erased for you?

Books/Articles/Literature
that you have not yet
read. Each article is worth 5 points and books are 20
points per 100 pages.

your report:

summary of your reading...list 3 - 4 main themes and 2-3 supporting details for
each.
b) In 3 - 5 sentences, what did you learn about ASL, Deaf Culture or the Deaf
Community in general? What misconceptions were erased for you?
Many books and publications are available in the ASL/ITP lab,
SCCC library, the Seattle Public and the King County Libraries.
