ASL 122 - Practice Sentences Set #1
Directions: Read the English sentences below. Convert them to ASL and determine the topic you want to talk about first before making a comment about the topic. Sometimes there are more than one topic in a sentence. Determine what would be the main or general topic before indicating the next topic item.
Remember: Sometimes you need more signs than English does words, sometimes fewer.
Students A/B:
Instructions: Take turns going through the sentences and use the underlined word as the topic.
A. Practice each sentence as a positive statement.
B. When done; convert the same sentence into a negative statement.

1. I have three apples and two oranges in my lunch bag.
2. The classroom is on the 4th floor.
3. My wife studies French in college.
4. My friend likes to ride trains.
5. Next weekend I am flying to New York City to visit my in-laws.

Instructions: Topicalize these sentences. Use the underlined concepts as the topic.
1. My brother lives in a one-bedroom house. (Don't forget to let go of the English).
2. My uncle's coffee cup is 30 years old.
3. The library is just around the left corner; it opens at 10:00 a.m. everyday.
4. I wore brown shoes today, but yesterday I had on blue boots.
5. I moved to Portland when I was eight years old. Then I moved back to Seattle after graduating from high school.
Narrative Practice: Sign the story below.
1. I bought my new, silver car last Thursday.
2. My 2 cousins came over to my house and we went cruising around in the car that same night.
3. When we came to the first red light, I braked too hard and hit my head on the steering wheel (use classifers!).
4. My cousin said we should go to a parking lot and practice using the brakes.
5. I practiced for half-an-hour, then we went to a restaurant for a snack.
