Lexicalized Fingerspelling 

ASL I22 - COMMON ABBREVIATIONS USED IN ASL
     
ASL will borrow words from the English Language and incorporate them in its sign vocabulary. This process takes place in ASL through the use of lexicalized fingerspelled loan signs. This happens when the two languages come into contact with one another.   Some of the glosses have special movement.  Examples of this borrowing process are listed below.

  Note:  the symbol # precedes the gloss to indicate that the sign is a lexicalized fingerspelled entity.
