ASL 102
Conditional Sentences

Conditional sentences are made up of two clauses.  The first states a condition, the 2nd states the resulting consequence.

For example:    If it rains, the ball game will be cancelled.

                                If I get a "D" on a test, my Dad will be mad.

Conditional sentences are signed using specific non manual signals:
                            *    Eye brow raise
                            *    Slight head tilt back
                            *    Hold the last sign of the first clause

The condition can be introduced using several different signs for "if":

                              IF (next to lower eye)
                              IF (next to upper eye)
                            #IF (lexicalized fingerspelling)

Practice signing these conditional sentences:

1.  If the teacher eats the apple; she will get sick.

2.  If your sister reads that book; she still will not understand it. It's too hard!

3.
  If the girl learns ASL; then she can teach deaf children.

4.  If your mom watches TV; she will fall asleep always!

5.  If you give me the money now; I might buy the tickets today.

6.  If it rains this Saturday; I absolutely refuse to cancel the soccer game!

7.  If Pat's car breaks down; then do you want to drive?

8.  If my flight gets postponed; I will be pissed!

9.  If the books haven't arrived; then I cannot teach my class.
