March 7th - 8th:
1. Take a few minutes and write down two questions now that you would like to ask the guest speaker either this Thursday or next Monday. The first question should be any issues related to Children Of A Lesser God (script or movie) and the second question (based on your Deaf Again text) should focus on growing up oral; family and/or educational background; communication issues; ASL; etc. There is no need to jot down your name - turn them in as soon as you get done with them.
2. If you are planning to take ASL 123 spring quarter; please register asap. The dean will make a decision before or during final exams week which section (M/W) or (T/TH) will go or be cancelled. To date, there is 8 registered for M/W and 3 for T/TH.
March 2nd - 3rd:
1. The winter quarter is soon coming to an end. We have less than 3 weeks before final exams. You still have homework in the next 2-3 weeks so it's important to keep on top of it as class will move at a quicker pace so expect a bit more pressure. You should have studied Unit 7 Core vocabulary last week and now be studying Unit 8 Core vocabulary. Also review your Modals and Compound Signs vocabulary as they will come up on the next quiz (Quiz #3). Check my schedule for quiz dates. Tuesday and Thursday class will have a guest speaker next Thursday, March 10th - the same evening that your Children Of A Lesser God assignments; Deaf Mosaic: Deaf President Now video report and your last Community Contact reports are due. Monday/Wednesday class - the same assignments are due Wednesday March 9th however a guest speaker will be coming to class on Monday March 14th instead. As for Unit 9 in the second workbook; you already know most of the vocabulary - I will still ask you to study Unit 9 Core vocabulary for the cumulative quiz (Quiz #4) during final exams week.
2. I have given you a deadline for any late homework (check Schedule again) but this does not apply to Signing Naturally Unit 5:4 - 5:7 as I have already covered the answers in class.
3. Registraton for ASL 123 next quarter has already started. If you are planning to take this class; please register asap. There are two sections of ASL 123 ie. a Mon/Wed class and a Tues/Thurs class. Don't forget that SCCC registration offers a monthly payment plan for your tuition costs.
February 8th:
1. Tuesday/Thursday class: As you are aware; class has been cancelled tonight due to illness. Please use the free time to: a) prepare for your vocabulary quiz next Tuesday (see my Schedule page for further info); b) practice Modal sentences on your own (click on link for Modals Review in my Lecture Notes); c) start studying Core Vocabulary Units CR 1-6 and 7 - you will find that there isn't a lot of new vocabulary to study and d) Click on Food Vocabulary in the top section of my Vocabulary and Assignments page; print out the list and click on the link for the streamed video and review it. You won't be required to know all the food signs like the different kinds of fruit and breakfast foods but you might want to know the signs for sandwiches, hamburgers and french fries, etc.
2) This week or next; we will start to transition over to the old workbook. You will find that there's way less homework and way less content compared to the new workbook. That is one of the main reasons the ASL faculty supplemented the curriculum by creating a Core Vocabulary list and video; adding several pages of grammar information as well as dialogue practice for various conversation functions. Unit 7 is relatively short and focuses on directions within a building. I will add some information on giving directions using city streets even though it's not part of the old Signing Naturally Curriculum. Unit 8 will focus on describing people and then Unit 9 covers making requests. You already know most of the vocabulary for Unit 9 so I will not spend very much time for that unit.
January 10 -11th:
1. If you look at my syllabus - it is a condensed version. I will post the "Full Syllabus" either tonight or tomorrow. Be sure to review it before class discussion this Wed or Thursday.
2) One of our Interpreting Training instructors had a digital camera and tripod set up in the front part of the lab last Thursday evening before my ASL 122 class begun for her students to use. It has been reported missing. I have been asked to ask all of you if any of you have seen it?? If so; please let me know. If any of you somehow "helped yourself to the camera"; please return the camera back to the lab asap and put it back where the camera was stationed.
January 4 - 6th: Welcome to ASL 122!
1) Seating arrangements in the classroom -
is always a semi-circular pattern. Be sure that you can see all of your
classmates clearly which means moving your desk
forward to adjust your visual line or telling your classmate to move
back. Please be assertive and don't wait for me to tell you. This is
one essential
Deaf Culture behavior that you will use all quarter especially when you
need to watch me dialogue with any student during an activity in class.
2) As in ASL 121, the
NO-voicing policy must be adhered to when you arrive to class.
To help reduce confusion and to minimize the interference of spoken
languages, I will ask that all students comply with our "voices
off" philosophy in the classroom at
all times.
Even if you don't follow what is going on in class, please be patient,
sit back and learn to use your eyes and hands. It may
take a while to "get it" for some students than others. If
you still don't understand, feel free to ask
your classmate or me in writing
or
raise your hand and then come to the board to write your question.
Don't be shy! Your classmates will benefit from your questions as
well. It is important to stick to the no-voicing rule throughout
the quarter. You will only be
allowed to use your voices when I give you permission to do so.
If it is just a personal question; then come up at break and inquire or
see me during office hours. There are times in the past when I've had to
ask a student to leave the classroom for the evening for being
disruptive and breaking the no-voicing rule.
3) Need to add this
class? See me during break please. I will need to know the
name of your ASL 1 instructor, where and when you took this class.
I will NOT accept students with a grade less than 2.0 received in ASL
121.
4) Breaks are
given half-way through the class for about 10 - 15 minutes. Please
return from breaks on time so that we can get started quickly.
5) Cell phones and pagers
are to be turned off for the entire class period. It is rude and
disruptive when you should be paying attention to the lecture or
participating in an activity. If this policy is not adhered to; I will ask you to put your cell phone on my table.
6) Some of you may be
attending University of Washington or other universities concurrently.
Your final exams at these universities may be given earlier than the
finals given at Seattle Central Community College. If so, do not request
permission to take the Seattle Central exams earlier. You are
expected to follow the SCCC schedule.
7) Instructor information
adhesive labels are ready. It has my office room number,
office hours, work email and website address.
Please do not lose that information especially
the web address - you will need the address to access
my ASL 122 home
page and other corresponding web pages constantly
during the entire quarter. Be sure to look at my web
schedule for homework assignments daily.
8) New and returning students: Please
navigate my ASL 122 website and become
familiar with all web pages and links this
week. Remember I will be giving you
instructor information adhesive labels
which includes my email and website
addresses this week so please don't not lose
that information.
When you log on to my website, click on ASL 122 in the left margin of my
ASL 121 - 123 Course Home page and go from there. Keep in
mind that not ALL links will be activated right away but later in the
quarter.
9)
ASL/ITP Lab:
The lab will be used sporadically throughout the whole quarter. You will use it mostly to watch any Deaf Culture videos that you might have missed or to record any expressive assignment to be done in or outside of class time using DVDs only. I had trouble accessing a few flash drives last quarter so I will no longer accept any thumb drives. Make
sure you have your SCCC
student ID ready for next week's lab -
you will need it for the entire quarter! When you
register for an ASL class at SCCC, you should have paid lab fees and
obtained a student ID as well. Any
assigned homework that are on videos are streamed and accessible via my website except
the Deaf Culture
videotapes.
10)
Community Contact Hours:
As spelled out in your syllabus, you will be required to do 5 hours of
Community Contact observation again this quarter. This time; attempt to engage in a brief conversation with a Deaf person at an event. You have more sign skills and vocabulary now to work with. Turn in your CC reports as soon as you have attended
an event rather than waiting for a due date. For students who transferred to SCCC this quarter, the
community contact events are posted on the ASL/ITP Lab bulletin board
next to room 1129. Please keep in mind that any first year ASL students will NOT be allowed to attend the Deaf-Blind community classes on campus due to space limitations.. For homework instructions, click on the link for Community
Contact Events in my Vocabulary and Assignments page. I will accept up to three hours of ASL tutoring towards your Community Contact hours this quarter so please take advantage of it! You can use tutoring to go over vocabulary, fingerspelling, numbers, your receptive and expressive assignments, etc. Andrea Kurs; our ASL tutor, will post her schedule starting the 2nd week of the quarter.
11) Very important announcement: We will be using two (2) Signing Naturally workbooks this quarter! You already have the first workbook " Signing Naturally Workbook Units 1 - 6". You will be required to purchase a 2nd Signing Naturally Workbook (blue/grey/white) Units 7 - 12. We will review parts of Units 4, 5 and parts of 6 in the NEW workbook and cover Units 7 - 9 in the 2nd workbook so please do not get confused. Pay attention to the unit number to differentiate between the 1st and 2nd workbooks. See my Syllabus web page for furthere information.
12) For Mon/Wed and Tues/Thurs students
who took ASL 1 last fall; I will be returning your homework.
Please pick up your paperwork at break time or at end of class.
13) When you come to class each time; do not sit with the same classmates all the time. Move around and sit with different people and get to know them! When you practice dialogues; everyone has a different signing style as do Deaf people thus the more exporusre, the better!
14) I will be reviewing parts of Signing Naturally Unit 4 due to some class cancellations last quarter on account of inclement weather. For students who have already been introduced to some of the same materials; I ask for your patience. Besides; it's good review anyhow!
