Deaf Culture Videotapes for ASL 121

DEAF CULTURE: Viewing Videotapes In CLASS:

When you study a language, you must also study the culture of the people who use the language.  Through these videotapes
we will explore the world of Deaf people.

Some of these videos we will watch together in class.  Some will be homework assignments.  You will need to watch all the
videos and complete the assignments to get full credit for this part of the course.

Listed below are the required videos that you will need to watch: (Minimum: 1 page typed - single spaced)

IN CLASS VIEWING of Videotapes AND RESPONSE QUESTIONS

For the first two videos; questions are two-fold. First; answer questions A - C immediately below. The third video "Through Deaf Eyes" has its own questions. See section on "Out Of Class Viewing and Response Questions".

A) Title of the videotape

B) Highlight 3 main issues or problems depicted in the video.

C) In 3-4 sentences what did you learn from the video?

Then; for each movie, there are specific questions you will have to answer.  See below:

        An Introduction to the Deaf Community:
1. What is the difference between the medical and the cultural view of the deaf community? 
2. Why do deaf people believe themselves to be a linguistic minority?  
3. What do deaf people want from hearing people? 

        The Mind Traveler:
1.Highlight 3 main issues or problems depicted in the video
2.Explain in 3-4 sentences what you learned in the video
3.Explain in detail what is the primary cause of Deaf-Blindness
4.Describe why is there such a high population of Deaf-Blind individuals in Seattle
5.Tell me if there were any stereotypes or beliefs you had of Deaf-Blind people that were proven true or false by this video.

 OUT OF CLASS VIEWING AND RESPONSE QUESTIONS

Through Deaf Eyes: This is an overview of Deaf history from the past to the present.

1. What did you think of the film?
2. What stood out for you?
3. What did you learn about Deaf culture, community, and history?
4. Did the film reinforce something you already knew about the Deaf community? Explain.
5. Describe something of your experience that the film reflects.
6. Describe anything in the film that you feel might have been left unsaid.
7. What did you learn in the video that had the greatest impact on you?
