a. Classroom Seating arrangement - always in a semi-circular arrangement.     WHY?    Visual requirements of ASL.  Be sure you can see all of your classmates easily.

c. Class breaks are 15 minutes long.  Please return on time as to not disrupt class activities.

Activities:

a) Manual Alphabet (ABC's)

(Those who already know the manual alphabet - be patient with your     classmates who are learning for the first time!)

b) First Day Questionnaire -  Icebreaker!
 

1. Instructor will pair students together.
 

2. Using the questionnaire, students are to ask each  other  in voice and fill out their respective classmate's information on their own handouts.


3. When done, wait for further instructions from instructor.


4. Instructor will then create larger groups of students.

  
Take turns and introduce yourself  to the other students and relay the following information:

     - why take class

     - previous sign experience

     - taken any previous ASL classes and where

    - have Deaf friends, relatives or co-workers

 
c) Survival Signs Vocabulary


d) Numbers 1 - 20


e) Commands/Colors

   (Great way to learn some signs fast i.e people, objects, colors)

     Addition practice (answers  must be up to 20 only)



    1.  Instructor demo

    2.  Instructions:  (Take turns - do this for about 10 - 15 minutes.  Go
             through Numbers 1 - 20 thoroughly.)


            a.     Student A signs addition question

           
b.    Student B responds

            c.    Student A confirms or corrects

            d.    Student B signs addition question

            e.    Student A responds

            f.     Student B corrects or confirms.
                      


4. Manual Alphabet Review
 

            a.    Vocabulary review (names, first, last)

            b.    Name practice

            c.    Pair practice  (theme is animals)

                    -- Take turns    
     
                    -- Fingerspell to your classmate the name of an animal

                    -- Partner is to fingerspell back

                    -- Correct or confirm!


 

 

 

5. Commands:  Great way to learn some signs fast!
