ASL 101 - Expressive Narrative #3 - "My XXth Birthday"
Introduction to space and contrastive structure

The Goal:  Duplicate structures we've practiced in class.

Directions:

1.  Envision your own birthday party similar to "My 40th Birthday" story from Receptive Narrative #3 as a guide for your story.

You can also watch a streamed video of "My 40th Birthday" here.

2.  Create a mental map and a signed story about your own birthday party.
Use the receptive narrative as a guide, but create your own story.  Be sure you have at least three characters, but you can have more. Be sure to set up spatial referents for them.  Your story can be made-up; not necessarily true.
Somewhere in your story have two characters do a short dialogue where one character asks another a question. Be sure to use role-switching techniques. Refer to RT #2 "Jack's Daily Grind" for role-shifting examples.

3.  Areas to focus on:

     a. Contrastive structure - use your space to compare and contrast similar qualities and
characteristics of each person.  Compare at least three people.

        b. Topicalization - use the correct facial grammar markers, especially when indicating
            each character.

        c. Questions - use the correct eyebrows for Yes/No questions or wh-word questions.

        d. Positive and Negative Statements - please demonstrate a few.

4.  Keep your story around 3  minutes in length.

Your polished sign draft is due next Monday or Tuesday, December 1st or 2nd for pair practice.  You will get feedback from your partner after narrative practice.  You will not use an evaluation form nor record in lab that evening.
