Community Contact Activities
(Total =50 points; 1 hour = 10 points)

NOTE: This means attending a minimum of 2 - 3 events to get the total 5 hours.   You cannot earn more than 25 points maximum on any activity.   For instance, staying at an deaf event for four hours will earn you a maximum of 25 points, NOT 40 points.

Goal: To Independently explore any avenue of interest related to deaf people, the deaf community and the language that they use to communicate with themselves and/or the greater community.  The best exposure you can receive about  Deaf people and American Sign Language is to participate in various deaf community events.  When observing and interacting at events primarily for deaf people, some examples are: a) Joining Deaf students/people for coffee, lunch, dinner, etc; b) Attending Deaf community events sponsored by organizations for the Deaf and c) Volunteering in programs/services for Deaf people

Directions: On your own (individually or in small groups) explore and experience any aspect of the deaf community that you find of interest. Each activity you do will be assigned points.

For each activity you must submit a typed  report (minimum - 1+ page) and include the following:

· Name of the activity
· Date of activity observed/participated
· How many hours of actual observation/participation
· A  description of your reactions or
feelings, or questions about the activity. What cultural behaviors did you observe??   What did you do during the activity??  Did you mainly observe?  Did you engage in conversation and if so, with whom?  Were they deaf, hard of hearing or hearing?

Details for these specific events below are usually posted on ASL/ITP Bulletin Board (outside Room 1129)
