We are here to provide support and direction as you pursue your educational goals. As a group we share common beliefs, but as individuals we may go about assisting you in slightly different ways. We recognize that counseling can be learning, and that real learning occurs when both the student and the counselor are fully involved.

What Is The Function Of A Counselor?

The counselor's role as both a counselor and a teacher is to provide support and direction, so you may learn how to become responsible for your learning and your personal growth. We are firmly committed to your success, and we will support your efforts to the best of our ability. Seattle Central's counselors are faculty professionals holding master's or doctoral degrees in counseling / guidance.

Counselors provide short–term counseling for a variety of problems, if the problem is of a longterm nature, the counselor may refer you to an appropriate professional in the surrounding area.

Personal Counseling

Personal counseling helps address issues that can make it difficult for students to succeed in college due to worry, stress, grief, anxiety, depression, problems with self-esteem or relationships, culture shock, and other life concerns that impact their ability to focus on their educational success. If long–term counseling or therapy is needed, referral may be made to community mental health resources.

Career Counseling

Career counseling or a career planning class helps students to explore the "fit" of a major / career for their skills, needs, personality, and interests, and introduces career research resources so they develop an action plan for understanding themselves, career options, and decision making. Counseling might include career assessment tools like the Strong Interest Inventory and the Myers–Briggs Type Indicator or referral to a career / life planning class and/or referral to the Career Information Center.

Academic Counseling

Academic counseling involves coping with problems with classes, adjusting to college culture, understanding college systems and processes, time management issues, etc. and might include referral to campus support services like the tutoring center or study skills classes.

Crisis Intervention

While at school, students may occasionally encounter extremely challenging situations, or respond to powerful issues in their personal lives. Counseling staff are available to address these immediate problems, refer to ongoing services and to follow up with the student.

Disability Support Services

Disability Support Services provides counseling and reasonable accommodations for students with a documented disability. These services are designed to provide needed support to succeed while studying at Seattle Central, as well as find access to other community support services.
