Can I participate in the program?
Students enrolled in college transfer courses or workforce education programs are eligible to participate in the Co-op program. Students can earn credit for their jobs (with permission) or paid/unpaid internships.
- Can I use my job to earn credit?
Students who wish to use their current positions to earn work experience credit must be able to significantly improve or learn new skills during their quarter of participation. Often, this means your employer must be willing to allow you to perform tasks above and beyond your current job description in order to provide an opportunity for skill improvement or new learning. Academic credit will not be awarded to a student simply for performing his/her current duties. If students are not working in positions that relate to their majors, the emphasis should be on improving/learning functional or transferable skills.
- How many credits can I earn?
Variable credits are awarded based on the number of hours worked during the quarter. The following is a general guideline:
10 hours per week 2 credits
15 hours per week 3 credits
20 hours per week 4 credits
25 hours per week 5 credits
40 hours per week 8 credits
Programs may have different hour requirements. To enroll for more than five credits requires permission of the Co-op Manager.
- When can I begin participating in the program?
Enrollment is continuous throughout the quarter. However, students must participate for 8-11 weeks before credit is granted. This means your participation may extend into the next quarter. Students will receive an "Incomplete" until course/hour requirements have been fulfilled. Students have one quarter to clear an Incomplete.
- How do I get started?
Contact the Co-op Office. The manager, or office staff, can provide you with information to register for a Co-op course. You will then choose one of the following options:
- 1. Individual Appointment with Co-op Manager
- 2. Self-Advised Option (written instructions)
If you choose #2, you will be responsible for familiarizing yourself with program policies and procedures. If you do not follow instructions carefully, you may receive an Incomplete or late grade for the quarter.
- How do I find an internship?
It is the student's responsibility to find a position suitable for participation in the Co-op Program. However, the office has numerous resources to assist students with their job search, including: Paid and unpaid internship opportunities, and volunteer listings.
