There was a giant (1+G) file of a memory dump or some-such from one of the VMs. Duplicity didn't like that.
usermap.txt corruption
tried addwebuser and the web accounts web interface thingy and neither triggered the problem...
Still no idea... I have a grep script that runs every 5 minutes to look out if it happens again...
