When Dylan Gets Hit By A Bus

Find a New Unix Person

If I've really been hit by a bus, dissapeared by Argentine despots or seduced by a trantric spider cult, the first thing you want to do is try and find another unix person. These docs will help you eke by for a while, but ultimately, you need a unix person. Hopefully these docs will let you get by until the new unix person can be found, purchased and installed.

In the Meantime

Shelly has been using my systems the longest. Blake is learning tons about linux, so don't ignore him as a resource. Bill Newman and other IT instructors might be able to help.

Vacation Documentation

I wrote Dylan_Vacation for when I go on vacation on a less permanent basis than that provided by the undercarriage of a bus.

Onward...

If you come across something that I haven't covered in my documents, here's a few hints:

  1. Everything is launched by cron or bootup scripts. If you know where they are and you read them, you'll be able to figure out what any system does.

Old Documentation

My previous attempt to document for this contingency can be found at https://www.seattlecentral.edu/dmartin/secure/howto. Most of this is wildly out of date, but if I get hit by a bus before I finish this newer version, it might help. I particularly recommend this section on UnixConcepts, as a general unix survival guide. Anything specific about our machines should be considered to be out of date (E.G. how to restore Zephir from tape). General unixy things, like how to edit a crontab file, are still good.

The Detailed System Information at https://www.seattlecentral.edu/dmartin/secure/syslist/ is totally out of date and should be shot.

The notes for a new unix admin at https://www.seattlecentral.edu/dmartin/secure/adminnotes/ are actually pretty good despite being 4 years out of date. There have been a lot of changes, but this document has a lot of basics and would be worth reading.
